Where Do I Put CLEP Exams on My Homeschool...
For those new to the subject, CLEP stands for College Level Examination Program, and it allows students to earn college credit when they have achieved a college amount of learning on a particular subject. CLEP exams do not have an age limit. It is not unusual to see 14 or 15 year old kids taking and passing CLEP exams. My youngest son passed 16 CLEP exams when he was 15 years old. This was worth almost two years of college, but the college he wanted to attend would only accept a year's worth of CLEP for credit (9 tests.) The other tests weren't wasted, however, because they allowed him to place into upper division college classes when he started at the university at age 16. One question[..]
"body"> The quality of education in this country continues to be the focus of a society committed to leveling the playing field for children. While some areas provide adequate - and even superlative - public schooling, other areas come up significantly short when it comes to providing high quality education. Private schooling can often be an alternative but many are also cost-prohibitive. When faced with this quandary, or when addressing the special educational needs of particular students, some parents turn to a home school program as an educational alternative. The reasons that many parents choose to home school are wide-ranging. There is often more to the decision then just[..]
Is Choosing a Pre-Packaged Homeschool...
When a family decides to homeschool, one of the first decisions they face is what they will use for learning materials. Most families choose one of the many pre-written curricula now available for sale to families that homeschool. But a significant number of families choose to design their own course of study. Whether families choose a pre-made curriculum, or design their own studies, it requires a significant commitment. There are great reasons to buy a course of study done by any number of companies that specialize in curriculum for homeschoolers. Some of the advantages to buying a pre-made curriculum include: 1. Everything is done for you. It's undeniable that it takes[..]
Crowning Blessings - A Fun Bible Object Lesson...
God's amazing blessings abound! His creation alone speaks volumes about His wonderful creative character. Here's a fun object lesson on God's crowning blessings to help them consider the goodness of God. Here's What You Do: The object you will use for this lesson will be a crown. I simply found a nice plastic ornate crown at one of my local party stores. But you could even use a crown that you create out of construction paper if you would like. Hold up your crown and ask the following questions to help stimulate discussion. 1. What am I holding? (Wait for answers such as "a crown".) 2. What is a crown for? (Wait for answers such as "a king or queen wears it to show that they are royalty[..]
Spiritual Truths For Home-School Vision Statements
Recently while engaging in a routine Bible study, I discovered a Psalm that had some foundational truths that apply to many things, not the least of which is in preparing a home-school vision statement to guide and direct your home-school program. That isn't an unusual revelation for those who are inclined to study the Bible for truth and meaning; however, I had not previously considered the points from Psalm 135 in this way before. With particular application to a home-school program, I believe that there are several things of which home-school parents should take note from this Psalm. These include preparing a heritage of learning for their children, demonstrating both judgment and[..]
Writing Prompts Profit From Homeschool Advantage
As a homeschooler, you have opportunities for developing writing skills public school teachers would envy. You don't have to have Caitlin write only in English class, as Miss Inky Fingers does. You can have Caitlin write on topics drawn from any subject she is studying. Research shows that writing in all subjects builds writing skill better and faster than English-class writing alone. With your ability to have students write across the curriculum, coupled with intimate knowledge of your student, you start half a lap ahead of the traditional school teachers. However, you may not know how to use your assets to create good expository writing prompts for students once they are out of[..]
Sometimes parents will ask me to compare AP vs. CLEP tests and wonder why we chose to use CLEPs. The answer to the second question is a big part of the answer to the first. AP tests are much longer, more expensive, and have ambiguous essay questions that irritated me. We chose to use CLEP exams because they took MUCH less time per test, were a little less expensive, and they were all multiple choice. (My kids also inherited my love for "right and wrong" answers.) Since the CLEP exams are shorter and have fewer questions, their questions are all pretty obscure. You have to know the detailed stuff in order to pass. Of course, that's also why they are college level. I found that my kids[..]
Teaching a Dyslexic Child
- Teaching a dyslexic child can be fun, hard work and invigorating. - It is important to be thorough, to assume nothing and to avoid patronising language. - Lessons need to be stimulating or the child will get bored. Spelling and reading can be livened up with the use of the computer. - Dyslexic children are often kinaesthetic learners and they enjoy practical activities. Fun aids learning. - These children can get frustrated easily and can switch off if the work is too hard. This may be a coping mechanism for dealing with whole class sessions when they may have experienced failure and frustration. - A lesson needs to keep moving and have several aspects to it. Keep things fresh but make[..]
At the last college fair, I spent a long time talking to military academies, especially Annapolis. All of the military academies accept homeschoolers, even when Mom makes the transcript. Homeschoolers are on completely equal footing with every other applicant. The big-time military academies want leadership and physical fitness to be as important as grades. They even have a "homeschool admission" page, which is always very helpful. Boy scouting is a huge plus. Anyway, they are welcoming to homeschoolers, and they value a homeschool transcript. That said, they are pretty competitive, but ROTC through other colleges is also available as a back up plan. The academic preparation for a[..]

If you send your children to local public schools for getting education and training for the development of the inner skill of your minor boys and girls, now, the school is completely different place with varied atmosphere where students coming from different walks of life. There is no scope for the individual care due to the lack of infrastructure and want of manpower. Parents prefer the home schooling because they can watch the movements of their kids at home. There will be no hard and fast[..]

True confession: I really admire people who do literary analysis in their home school. I simply wasn't capable. It seems odd that someone who is such a fan of literature-based curriculum would say that. I primarily used Sonlight Curriculum, and later The Well Trained Mind. Sonlight was the easiest to use, but after a while we had read most of the books, so I switched to The Well Trained Mind reading lists and other "reading lists for the college bound." I always tried to tie in the reading with the history. We didn't do any "literary analysis" - we just enjoyed the books. My kids loved it so much they both signed up for the great books honors course in college - and did very well. But[..]

How to Get Started in Home Schooling
Home schooling has been around for centuries. The beginning of schooling actually started in the home and then moved into outside schoolhouses. Homeschool Curriculum - Have You Considered...
You have decided to teach your children at home. But which homeschool curriculum will you choose? Have you considered Waldorf Homeschooling? The Waldorf Homeschooling curriculum has garnered a lot of followers in recent years. One of the reasons for such increasing interest is the school seems to react to what many complain is a couch potato society and children who are far too dependent on technology. What is the Waldorf method? It is based on the work of Rudolf Steiner and stresses the importance of educating the whole child. According to one parent's forum, Waldorf "emphasizes body, mind, and spirit. In the early grades, there is an emphasis on arts and crafts, music and movement,[..]
How to Train Your Child in Perseverance
Perseverance - persistence, endurance, stick-to-itiveness, staying power, dogged, diligence. What a list of great nouns found in Roget's Thesaurus. I chose to write about Perseverance not only as a goal that I can see I need to work at in my life, but one which is so extremely important for us to pass on to our children. If I have difficultyin persevering when I am feeling a bit down, overwhelmed, or tired and give in so easily, and I am an adult, this is obviously a life-long trait which needs to be built into our character from an early age. Our culture does not encourage perseverance. As long as you are enjoying what you are doing, you are encouraged to keep going, but if you[..]
Homeschool families love what they do. They love the freedoms that are afforded to them. They love the fact that they can suit their homeschool program to fit their values and objectives, and they love the flexibility to do so on their schedule. Several of these common traps can easily be avoided with a little attention to scheduling and accountability. 1 - Often, homeschool families try too hard to make themselves look like the local public[..]

Can Home-Schooling Protect Your Child?
Parents want the best for their children in every aspect. In aspect of education, some take it a step further and decide to home-school their child. Reasons for home-schooling children are different. Some parents think that their children will not get the best possible education in public schools and that they can do much better if they learn at home. In many cases, this is truth. Why? Students who attend a public school are not alone there. They have classmates with whom they are sharing teacher's attention and time. They must learn by public school programs and there is not enough time for students to spend more time in areas where they are weaker or to excel where they are good. This[..]
The Good and Bad of Home Schooling
As is the case with just about anything in life, with the good also comes the bad, and while the benefits of home schooling definitely outweigh the negatives, there are certainly two sides to every story. Here are both ends of the spectrum, both the good and the bad sides, so you can make an informed decision that will be best for your precious child and your household. The Good Side of Home Schooling School can often be a rather stressful place for children, which doesn't exactly allow for an environment that's conducive to learning. If a child is having trouble with bullies or similar stressful occurrences and other solutions have been exhausted, home schooling may be an option to[..]
How Do Parents React to Home Schooling?
Home schooling is a completely different education center which is the byproduct of the modern concept on education. If education means the total uplift and the development of the mind and your skills, you should get the proper ambiance to flourish your talent, which will help you to participate in the nation-building activities. Ok, home schooling has broken the barrier of the conventional education system and it will grow with full fledge in the coming decades. In past, this type of home school put emphasis on the evangelism which was built on religion based training programs. In 1980 Christian community started their home schools for encouraging the like minded people to educate their[..]
Is There Such a Thing As Affordable Home...
Although home schooling is not as pricey as private school, it also isn't free and can be more costly than one would think. Some parents allege that they're spending a great deal less by teaching their kids themselves, but an educator who has analyzed this says the real costs may be surprising. So, the question remains, can there be affordable home schooling out there? If you were to take in consideration the cost of supplies and needing to have a parent devoted to teaching their children at home instead of assuming an external job the price would appear to be kind of high. A study showed that families with 3 or more children just about universally decide to send their kids back to[..]

Making the decision to home school your child is not the easiest decision at the best of times, but what about when the weight of your decision is compounded by the fact that your child has been diagnosed with a learning disability? Firstly, do not despair that your child has been 'categorised' as having a learning disability. This may or may not be correct. It may simply be that the classroom that the child is in follows a teaching style not optimal for your child's learning style. If this is the case, then more personalised and focused attention may yield very different results. Even if your child has been diagnosed with a learning disability by more than one professional, you must[..]
Air out the back packs, pick out new lunch boxes, hit the warehouse and discount retailers for markers, pencils and glue sticks. It's school time! What exactly does that mean for you and your family? Does it mean you need to get the kids re-adjusted to an earlier bed time and wake up time? Are you first week in the carpool? Maybe you need to check where the new bus stop is. All this seems completely normal and habitual for some, but for those of us who choose to educate our children at home...It's a whole different box of crayons! How blessed I felt this year when I again realized I didn't have a teacher wish list, or class supply list to fill. Of course there were a handful of items to[..]
Making Good Use of Homeschool Worksheets
Homeschool worksheets are a vital part of the student's homeschool experience. They allow the child to test his or her knowledge, and they offer them a practical application for their learning. Worksheets also, when used properly, provide both the students and parent / tutor immediate feedback as to the child's progress. This means they can be used to point out areas where the student needs further reinforcement. Homeschool worksheets fortunately will not over-tax your budget. There are many places where you can get them at extremely low costs. In fact, several websites offer printable worksheets for free. You can find worksheets for a wide range of courses--almost any course you want to[..]
What Are Homeschool Unit Studies?
Now that you have made the decision to homeschool your children, the next major question is which of the many teaching strategies do you use? This is a critical question because the success or failure of your homeschooling will depend in large part on the materials you select for your children's education. One approach to be considered is homeschool unit studies. What are homeschool unit studies? Simply stated, homeschool unit studies allow teachers of homeschooling to build lessons around their child's interests. How exactly does this work? Suppose your child expresses an interest in President Obama. You could formulate an arts class by having the student draw pictures of the president,[..]
Fictional Learning - Assembly Lines and Warehouses
Another bit of fiction we weave into our children's' lives calling it 'school' is the physical environment through which they pass the years of their childhood. We place them in huge, ugly warehouses, isolated from all other people and all real-world productivity. These warehouses are filled with noisy, pushy children who are no more needed than our own children. They spend their hours in windowless rooms, white-walled cubes, fifty minutes, then a bell, then a quick rush through hallways of confusion during which they are 'supposed' to use the restroom, crowds of kids, all at the same time, all going in different directions. Then another fifty minutes in another isolated cube. And so[..]
As with any job or task, we often find ourselves becoming complacent and homeschooling your child is not different. Sometimes you might wake up thinking to yourself that this is becoming more of a job than an adventure. It is certainly okay to feel that way from time to time but it can also be a deterrent to continuing your child's education at home if you wake up feeling this way every day. Some of the ways that you can get your motivation are also going to be determined by what is going on in your life at the time and how your health is holding up. If you have been sticking to the same type of schedule for an extended period of time, then a time to change that schedule is now. Having[..]
What educational format is best for the ADD/ADHD child? As a parent, there are many choices, and increasingly popular choices, to public education. While making a decision may seem more difficult in the case of ADD/ADHD, the process is the same for the parent of any child. A recent article in USA Today reports that home schooling has been on a steady rise for the last five years. There are now 1.5 million children being home schooled, up 74% since 1999. A desire for religious or moral instruction, formerly the number one reason to choose homeschooling, is now the second most popular reason. The first reason is safety and avoidance of peer pressure and exposure to drugs. Third is the[..]
The objective of homeschool families is to produce lifelong learners. Over 2 million homeschool families are giving their children an excellent education while also instilling sound values and enriching their family lives. Homeschooling is a way of life where family is central and children clearly revere and have respect for their parents. One of the primary reason why families decide to homeschool is a general dissatisfaction and disappointment with the academic standards offered in the public schools. Many homeschool families feel that public schools have become a toxic brew that are totally infested with politically correct thought which hinders free speech, and historically incorrect[..]
Early is Best - Tutoring in the Modern Age
"Give me the child until he is seven, and I will show you the man," the Jesuits used to say. If you subscribe to the view that humans can be persuaded, conditioned or just trained from an early age to see the world in a certain way, then one can certainly understand the Jesuit philosophy. Many anxious parents, distressed with the state schooling system, wonder when they are best to start having their children tutored. Nurturing and Developing Every Child's Potential Starting tutoring at a young age, we can inculcate a number of core values and a certain rigour which is never lost. Parents, and especially grandparents, ask about timing for legacies which they intend for their loved ones,[..]
Homeschooling 101 - Can You Really Burnout?
Thinking of homeschooling your child? Have you already decided to assume responsibility for educating your children? You may not be aware, but burnout can be a common problem with home-schoolers. Your child may suffer burnout, but you also are liable to suffer some degree of burnout. Many causes can be found that contribute to this burnout, and the good news is, it can be easily addressed. Cause of burnout may be as simple as illness, changing family dynamics like a new child, changing work requirements for the parents or modest changes in household schedule. The actual signs and symptoms associated with burnout can manifest as loss of patience, over-indulging, boredom, emotional bouts[..]
My Child Can Still Say the Pledge of Allegiance...
The founding fathers of this great nation knew that there would be times when we would need inspiration and words that would bring courage to the young and old. It is also one of a few points of inspiration that is mixed in everything that is taught in our home school. One of the many meanings that the Pledge of Allegiance has meant for me is inspiration to loyalty and courage, even considering that it was not conceived until 1892. Formally recognized by Congress in 1942, that's enough history for me. It is also a viewpoint that I teach at our home school, and one that occasionally get's the teenagers in heated discussions with public school teens as to why we should say the pledge[..]
Quality Education With Homeschooling Books
While the value of classroom education is undeniable, there is also some good to be learned in homeschooling. For many parents, homeschooling has been a great learning and education method for the family. Parents have found that being hands-on with their kids when it comes to teaching them the subjects also taught at school is refreshing and allows them to have more ways of communicating with their children. Given the right set of homeschooling books, homeschooling can be a very effective schooling method. What should parents do when in search of the best sets of books for homeschooling? First, the textbook should be suited for the child's age. Parents should look at different authors[..]
Homeschool Supplies - 6 Essential Items That...
Whether you are just starting out with getting homeschool supplies or continuing to add to your resources, these are some items that I think no homeschool should be without. 1. Paper and lots of it. There are so many different kinds of paper. Get a nice variety for your child to use. I suggest colored paper, lined paper, big and small paper and any variety of paper you can think of. You don't necessarily have to pay retail for all of it either. Sometimes businesses have extra paper from their computer printer that they don't use. Keep your eyes open for different sources of free paper and then buy what you weren't able to get for free. 2. Pens, pencils, markers or any other kind of[..]
Disadvantages of Homeschooling - Have You...
You are thinking about or have already decided to teach your children at home. But have you considered the disadvantages of homeschooling? These are serious matters which demand your sincere and devoted consideration. Number one on the list of disadvantages of homeschooling is the commitment required by parents. Usually, and it is very rare for this not to be the case, one parent is going to be responsible for the home school. That parent is going to have to take full responsibility for for the child's or children's education and the success or failure of the child cannot be blamed on a crowded classroom, incompetent teacher, or any of the other myriad of reasons parents give for their[..]
Your Homeschool Planner - How to Use it As a...
How can a Homeschool Planner help you? Many homeschool families would agree that being organized will help to determine the peacefulness and smooth running of a home. Whilst not all things are under our control, actively putting routines and systems in place help us prioritize our lives and pursue our goals. The first three habits which Stephen Covey addresses in "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People", are - Be Proactive - Begin with the end in mind - Put First Things First Although I will not be addressing these habits in detail, it is amazing how a Homeschool Planner allows you to puts these habits into action. Proactive people will use their initiative to find solutions and[..]
Homeschooling: What to Teach and When
Homeschool parents benefit from technology to enhance and complement traditional ways of teaching on school campus. There are several educational software and teaching packages that can help develop a curriculum. The internet is a very useful means that is full of educational resources; online dictionaries, libraries, encyclopedias and museums. Depending on your State's homeschooling law, the following may apply: 1. School officials can inquire about the parents' qualifications to instruct or teach their child; however instructing parents do not necessarily need to have a particular educational qualification. A high school graduate or less can instruct the child, provided that she has[..]
Homeschooling Your Children
Although challenging, homeschooling is a wonderful investment into your children's future. Of course, every family has their own good reasons for homeschooling. Some may desire to provide an education tailored to a child's learning style. (I have a friend who is homeschooling her children because the local public school system just couldn't meet some of their needs.) Others may homeschool for religious reasons. Personally, we decided to homeschool so we could spend more time with our children and present our real-life values in a daily, real-life way. Early on, we learned that formal qualifications could be valuable, but didn't matter too much from a legal standpoint. That didn't mean we[..]
Homeschool Math - Choose Mastery Over Perfection
Many homeschool parents struggle with children who understand math concepts but are careless in doing their schoolwork. The result is math problems that are frequently incorrect, not because they don't understand, but because they rushed through and made silly errors (adding wrong, wrong decimal placement, etc.) Parents can be driven to distraction because they want their children to be careful when doing their work, rather than rushing through and making mistakes. So how should a homeschool parent deal with chronic carelessness? Carelessness, especially with math, is a complicated subject. Homeschool parents want their kids to do well, understand a subject and achieve mastery.[..]
Books ruled in our homeschool! We love books. We absorb books. Anything that we need to know can be learned in a book. Sometimes people ask me why our reading lists were so incredibly long. It was not because I assigned all those books, I can tell you that much! For both of my boys, reading is their "love language." Give them a book, and they will love you forever. Every Christmas, their wish list includes specific books. Our reading list is so long because that is how my children learn best. Try to identify the preferred method of learning for your child. Maybe they learn best by doing. Maybe they learn best when they hear something. Maybe they can imitate anything once they see it done[..]
It is not easy for parents to home school the child. But once you begin it, you will realize the immense benefits of home schooling and would feel pleased with your decision that you took for your child, yourself and your family as a whole. There are many reasons for which you would like to consider the option of home schooling your child. To begin with, your child gets one to one attention, which is not possible if you send him to a public school. Also, you can tailor the course according to your child's needs, which only you know better. Your child learns your social and moral values when he/she gets home schooling. You become not only his/her parent, but also his/her mentor and teach[..]
As a homeschooling parent of a child with autism, I am often asked, "How do you do it?" It takes dedication, planning, and research, of course, but I find that it is not all that difficult when I remember why I do it. There are 5 primary reasons why homeschooling is the best option for my child: 1. One-to-one instruction provides for optimal learning. It is a generally-accepted educational principle that the lower the teacher-to-student ratio, the more effective the teaching can be. Most parents realize that the more students a teacher has, the less attention and direct instruction each student will receive from the teacher. One-to-one instruction is always preferred for private lessons[..]
Many work at home moms homeschool their children, as do many mothers who work outside the home both full time and part time. If you believe homeschooling is the right thing to do for your family, you can make it happen. Here's why. There really is no right or wrong way to homeschool. There's no right or wrong time of day to homeschool. There is no right or wrong time of the year to homeschool. We all do what works best for our own families. The methods of homeschooling are as varied as are the homeschooling families themselves. Here are some ways you can make time for both your home business and your children's education. Set aside time to teach. We begin our schoolday at 8am. That's[..]
Disadvantages of Home Schooling
In the recent news, there have been so many problems in school, such as Columbine, the teaching shortages, overcrowded class room and the no child left behind program, and parents are turning to home school. The media has gone out of its way to point out the disadvantages of public school. But how many people have taken a look at home school disadvantages, some situations may not be appropriate for the child when home schooling. While the concept of home schooling is great, there are a few situations where home schooling may not be a good thing. Some parents don't have adequate education, they have busy lifestyles, and they have limited financial resources. Although in certain[..]
The other day, I made a mistake. The first thing you do when you make a mistake is to admit to it and correct it with dispatch. I stated that the person who first coined the word 'Stress' was named Hans Sdye. This is wrong. The gentleman's name was Selye, a Slovakian born in Komarno in 1907. The article that contains this mistake will be corrected also. Since we're back on stress, I thought it might be interesting to discuss the stress that I and others experienced when we went to school, all of 60 years ago, and compare it with the stress that children today might suffer. Now hands up all those who've read 'Tom Brown's Schooldays.' My schooldays were similar, but while I suffered a fair[..]
Home schooling is a great way to get an education. It is a flexible, child centred way of learning. There are as many reasons why parents choose to home school their children as their are home schooled children and all are valid. However, there are some subjects that can be a challenge to teach yourself. This is where the "wonders of modern technology" can support you in your quest for a fully rounded curriculum for your child. Teaching foreign languages can be tricky for those of us who are not bilingual. Some of us are reasonably ok at one, or possibly two additional languages, but what happens when we have reached the limits of our knowledge and our children are thirsty for more?[..]
One of the best things about holidays is the enthusiasm that kids have. This enthusiasm offers many opportunities for kids to learn while they have fun. There are many kids' Easter activities that are more than just fun and games. They are also opportunities to learn and develop skills and creativity. There are some great outdoor Easter activities for kids that just need you to add an egg or two and you can have egg and spoon races, egg throwing competitions, egg hunts and egg relays. For the egg and spoon races have the kids race as they carry an egg on a spoon. To make the races even more interesting create an obstacle course that requires them to go up, down, in, out, through and[..]
