Home schooling has a growing number of supporters, but it would be unwise to ignore the many home school disadvantages, not just of the children but also for the parents. Home schooling requires a lot of sacrifice on the part of the parents in physical, financial and emotional and social terms. Parents have to devote time to learning the matter they will be teaching, teach it, organize future schedules, arrange for field trips and other outside activities and then arrange for some social inter action for their children with their peers. That's a full day job. Another of the many home school disadvantages is the cost when the expense of all the inputs required for home schooling are[..]

What do home schooling groups need to do to keep their parents up on the latest and insure that their kids get a quality home education. There are many things to consider and with groups of parents working together they can learn a lot from each other. Here are some thoughts below; - Of course I am a huge proponent of mentorship from parents and others with specialties, although I was not home-schooled I know the mentorships I received helped me for sure. - If the parents feed their kids sugar and crap before school they act out more and if there is little or no discipline at home, how could there be in the classroom and it only takes a few disruptive kids to destroy the classroom[..]

There is always a case for home schooling and parents choose to home educate their children for a broad range of reasons. For every case there are voices of opposition and doubt. This article is one of a series addressing a range of the notions raised by these voices - the concern over parental resourcefulness. In the Adelaide newspaper, The Advertiser (Australia), there was recently an article entitled 'In a Class of Their Own' which reported on the increase in home schooling numbers in the last year. The article also had the comment made by a teacher, with 35 years experience, who chose to remain unnamed, that it would be impossible for a parent to provide the level of education needed[..]

The rising number of parents choosing home schooling for their children over the past two decades is a reflection of a rising number of reasons causing their dissatisfaction with public schools. Many parents fear for their children's safety, are concerned that overcrowded classrooms may mean that their children are not getting the individual instruction they need from overworked teachers, and would prefer to instill their own moral or religious convictions in their children as a part of an educational curriculum. So they have turned to home schooling. The basics of home schooling, however, are something that any parent should understand before deciding to take on the job. While home[..]

Stories about a disturbing number of parents abandoning their children in Nebraska have captured national headlines. A safe haven law with an unfortunate loophole allows parents to drop off their children at any hospital in the state without consequence. Although the law was initially designed to protect infants in unwanted circumstances, parents of older children are using this law as a way out of difficult situations. These types of stories shine a negative light on all parents across the nation, stealing the spotlight away from truly newsworthy parents. There are many valid reasons why parent may decide to remove their children from public schools and begin home schooling them. Hundreds of thousands of parents across America have come to the conclusion that public schools simply cannot guarantee their children's safety; that public school overcrowding is depriving their children of the individual attention they need from their teachers; and that the presence from bullies and uncontrollable children in public schools is to distracting for their children. While there are many negatives in the public school experience which justify the decision to begin home schooling a child, there is also one very big positive. Research studies have[..]

Math is one subject that scares a lot of home schooling parents, especially as their children get older. Usually this is because the parents didn't do well in math when they were in school. The main problem with math, is that math is a very "sequential" subject. The new material always depends heavily on what you were taught before. If you have a problem (i.e. if you miss a few things because of sickness, a bad teacher, or other problems in a particular school year), you have to go back and "fix" the problem, or you will have difficulty understanding things after that point. If this happened to you, even only a few times during all the years you were in school, the chances of you having[..]

One of our family's favorite part of homeschooling was the regular field trips we took. Sometimes we go with the support group and their families, and other times just ourselves. It's a great way to get out of the house, and enjoy activities outside the "normal" schoolwork. Many times when you're studying a particular subject, you may decide that a field trip to the local museum or university science lab would fit in perfectly with what you're learning. So, what are you waiting for? Go for it! You're the teacher. You don't need anyone else's permission to stop the regular lessons for the day, and just go out on a field trip. Not everyone is that spontaneous, however. So, why not plan[..]

It is very important to keep a record of your child's homeschooling education not only because it is legally required in many states but also it records and document the learning process of the child. It is necessary for the parent to keep some sort of a log which records the child's progress. The main reason why most parents do not keep a record is because they do not like to write. Without a distinct plan, it will become easy to neglect your overall goals. Many parents don't understand what goes on at their kids' schools these days. It's not the 1950's anymore. Classrooms are being dumbed-down to allow the under achievers to move on to higher grade levels to keep the schools' achievement rate high for funding purposes or conversely, to avoid being put on a watch list by their state education board. Smart students are being penalized in certain cases because they are being held back from their full educational potential and in certain instances being used to tutor the slower students.
