Homeschooling High School - What Type of...
One concern parents have when facing homeschool high school is whether their curriculum choices will adequately prepare their students for college. Like many things about homeschooling, there is no single correct answer for which curriculum a parent should use. The choice largely depends on the nature of their homeschool, the needs of their child, and their goals for their child's education. I suppose the reason there are so many homeschool curriculum choices is because there are so many different types of homeschoolers! One of the reasons our family shops at Costco is to avoid being overwhelmed by the number of choices. There is basically one house brand and one size (HUGE.) When we[..]
Ten Myths About Homeschooling and...
Prospective homeschool parents have to face fears, doubts and myths that keep them from taking the decision to homeschool their children. This article is an attempt to do some myth-busting, dispel the fears and disqualify the anti-homeschooling excuses that prevent many parents from the awesome experience of homeschooling their families...(yes, not just the kids, the parents get HOME schooled too!) 1. I don't get on with my kids/ My kids have bad attitudes/ My kids won't listen to me. This, to me, is one of the best reasons to homeschool. Instead of running from discipline issues that need to be tackled, loving parents need to embrace opportunities to teach and train their children to be[..]
The Actual Facts About Homeschooling
There are many great public and private schools, but home school models true learning by channeling the child into natural learning experiences. This is not a new concept. Before the urbanization of the United States, attending school was not feasible for many people in rural areas. These families taught their children how to read and write, and do numbers just as they did everything else. Somewhere in there, they still managed create a world power and win the west. On the other side, the wealthy have been hiring private tutors since the dawn of time. In the 21st century, many parents choose home schooling as a means to have more control over their child's development. The resources are[..]
For parents of preschool homeschool children, special days and events provide an opportunity to customize their child's education and expand their knowledge in new ways. Homeschooling textbooks provide a good foundation in many instances, but it is also a great time to bring that education off the page. Doing so makes education more entertaining, but it also acts as a highly effective way for children to learn many honorable traits and ideas from the heroes who have shaped our world. Local Activities Just because preschool homeschool children take their lessons at home doesn't mean they can't enjoy the opportunities offered by the local community. The library provides you and your child[..]
y"> A lot of research has been done to proof that home schooled children's academic achievements are better than that of learners in public schools. There is, on the other hand, very little research available to proof arguments against homeschooling. Certain questions that were raised by experts in the education field can, however, not be ignored. Regulation of homeschooling seems to lack dismally in most states of the USA. The parent has the freedom to teach any curriculum and some even work without a specific curriculum. Marty Hittelman, the president of the California Federation for teachers, has a problem with the stringent standards, evaluation and training teachers are subjected[..]

Homeschooling - Is 4-Days-a-Week Homeschool...
In our homeschool, we did all of our assigned course work in 4 days each week. The fifth day was reserved for my kids to explore their areas of special passion. It was still a "school day" but we left it largely unstructured. When my kids were younger, that fifth day was reserved for "park day" or "book report lunches." As they got older, however, the fifth day was left for them to study there areas of passion (in our case, chess and economics) and also to work at meaningful employment. I am often asked how we managed to "do it all" in four days. In short, the answer is - we didn't! We used Sonlight for most of their elementary and junior high. Most of the things my children could[..]
Homeschooling High School - What Do Kids Need...
So what is a college prep education? What do homeschool kids who want to go to college need to know. These weighty questions have been the subject of full length books. In this article, I will give you a simple, "no fear" approach to educating your homeschool high school student. Just some basic guidelines to encourage you to do what you probably already know is right for your student. First off, it's important to balance what your child needs to know, with what they WANT to do. If you can focus on just the basic, core classes, with limited fluff, then even in high school they can still get their schoolwork done in a reasonable amount of time. Math does take a long time each day,[..]
How to Make Money While Homeschooling
If you ask a homeschool family why they do what they do, you are likely to get a variety of answers. Most likely though, their answers will include flexibility and the ability to engage in something that they are passionate about. Let's face it, things that we are passionate about are always much more fun and productive, and that is certainly true for homeschooling. They are not always profitable, but in this case, it can be. There are many families who wish they could homeschool, but for financial reasons, are regrettably unable to experience the passion, depth of education, and flexibility that their homeschooling friends experience. The solution to their needs can be met by the[..]
Serving in the military is an honorable and worthy aspiration, and homeschool students can look forward to this opportunity upon high school graduation if they choose, just as any other student can do. Although there has been some confusion on the enlistment process, several points need to be kept in mind that will allow homeschool graduates to meet the standards as outlined in the June 1, 2007, Department of Defense policy on homeschool students and their ability to earn Tier 1 status. Tier 1 status will open many doors to the homeschool graduate, and with it come many benefits of military enlistment, so keep these things in mind as you work through high school if this path of[..]
Home Tuition - Find a Good Tutor From a Tuition...
p>Parents who can afford home tuition should know that tuition can provide great help to students who have the potential to score excellent results. Parents spend more than the amount they pay for school fees and private home tuition according to a Straits Times survey. This could mean that many parents consider hiring tutors for their children. But before hiring a tutor from a tuition agency, one should always look out for these points: Educational Qualifications - It is very important that one should always look through the educational background of the tutor before hiring one. The tutor's educational qualifications say a lot about the tutor. Tutors who have gone through examinations[..]
Six Things You Need to Start Homeschooling Your...
Homeschooling is an incredible method of delivering quality education. There are very few educational methods that allow for the same degree of one-one-one, individualized attention to a student's learning. As many a homeschooling family will tell you, there are an abundance of rewards that come from shaping and forming their children - both academically and personally - through homeschooling. However, it is not without its challenges and should therefore, never be entered into rashly. Looking at the "why" or "why not" issue of homeschooling, there are several things that you will want to have in your personal skill set in order to begin homeschooling. Six, in fact. If you spend time to[..]
Why Responsible Parents Should Consider...
My ears perk up when I hear about parents homeschooling their kids through graduation. It is my life's passion and a calling that I have tried to share with so many caring parents. I have experienced the joys of being able to personally attend to the formative years of my two boys, who after homeschooling high school, proceeded to their chosen colleges with full tuition scholarships. Responsible parents can always find valid and compelling reasons why they should safeguard their teenage kids from the possibly adverse consequences of public school life. I have always taken the position that parents must take active part in the education of their kids. They ought not to rely on the morally[..]
Learning music as adults is different than what we did as children. Have you noticed just how excited a child can get when they get a new technique or understanding of theory? How about gleaming an understanding of a new chord, improved sound, or completing a new song? These learning experiences were fun, new, exciting, and enchanted us with curiosity. However, as adults, our frustration levels are high due to our lack of time and ability to focus on our intended hobby or pursuit, particularly when we consider music. In this day of instant gratification, our frustration and disappointment levels go up even higher as we struggle with all the obligations of time. We need to be able to step[..]
The Face of Education Today
What does education look like today? Does it match what is expected in the real world? "We are so trapped in the memory of what school was like for us. When we were students, the world outside of school looked like the world inside of school. Now, it does not. The paper based system does not make any sense to kids who are coming up in school. Is our educational system geared toward innovation? Do we want an 18th century model or a 21st century model for our schools?" - Susan Patrick U.S. Dept of Ed. Though I would not agree with many things that Ms. Patrick would say, I do agree that we need to give our children an education that is geared toward real life. It is true for many of our[..]
Things to Consider When Homeschooling Your...
Homeschooling families are increasing in number and the reasons that lead families into homeschooling vary. But several things remain true. When you have decided to homeschool, there are a few things to keep in mind and periodically consider when you take on this role for your children. If you are just getting started, you might want to read a related article, "Six Things You Need To Start Homeschooling," but for the veteran, it's always good to reassess your role from time to time. Some of these things to consider are for your kids, and some of them are for you, but frequently consider the following factors when homeschooling your children. 1. Are you focusing on core academic subjects[..]
Homeschooling - Education Vs Indoctrination
I toy with the idea of homeschooling from time to time. I'm ambivalent about it at best. I have mixed feelings because of my own homeschooling experiences - and I wonder how much of it is to do with my desire to protect Riley from EVERYTHING. Oh don't mind my neurotic self, she doesn't get that absolute protection isn't desirable or even possible. I can definitely understand some of the benefits of homeschooling, particularly in terms of all the wasted time that traditional schooling entails. And even beyond that, the traditional school environment is not suited to everyone, is inside and more dogmatic than experiential. But I also see it's limitations. And mine. The idea of giving up[..]
Advantages and Disadvantages of Homeschooling
Homeschooling has become very popular every single day. It is growing 7 to 15 percent every year. Homeschooled children have that reputation for being self-directed learners as adults. They are welcome in colleges and universities after learning at home for some period of time. However, there are always the negative and positive effects of homeschooling. To help parents make their decision if they want to enroll their kids in these classes, here are some positive and negative sides of homeschooling. The Pros The students have the choice to study and learn what they would like to learn without any time constrictions. Families and their children have the physical freedom when it comes to[..]
Homeschooling Becoming A Viable Alternative?
Last year alone, more than one million children in the United States choose homeschooling over traditional education. This stunting figure was released according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Homeschooling is a recent development in education. Not that long ago, it was considered too radical by many education experts. Nowadays, it is legalized in every state and more than 1 million children has undergone homeschooling and I suspect many more parents are seriously considering homeschooling. The interesting thing was what prompted such a change? There have been many recent surveys to suggest that parents are getting impatient and fed up with our public schooling system.[..]
College scholarships are available for older students. There are two kinds of scholarships, merit scholarships based on some characteristic of students (high grades, or a particular skill or gift.) There are also need-based scholarships, based on income. Some students may be considered independent adults, even though we might still view them as "children." When that is the case, their need-based scholarships may be quite substantial. If they base their financial aid on the STUDENT'S income rather than the PARENT'S income, you could get a LOT of financial aid. You can also search for private scholarships while you are waiting to enter college. SAT and ACT scores are used to help determine[..]
Home Schooling - The New Way of Education in...
In this era, the world is advancing at very high speed, every field is moving at a light fast speed and every organization and also individuals are excelling every day. In this sense some people are asking about the home schooling system that why this system till now cannot play a role in modern life. Many of the people do not know about the home schooling system. What is this? Some parents find that there is no quality education in school and the teacher who is trying to give individual attention on each student is impossible and can never happen. Also it is difficult for a teacher to give time to each student in a well manner and can convey his messages to all his students. Like when[..]
Homeschool High School - I Am the Weakest Link!
Although I took calculus in college.... OK, that's not completely true. I actually took calculus TWICE in college because I failed it the first time! Allow me to start again.... Although I have taken calculus repeatedly, I don't actually know any calculus right now. In fact, from the time my kids were in Algebra 2, I was completely lost. My boys both used Saxon Math with DIVE CD's for Advanced Math and Calculus, and we supplemented that with The Teaching Company course called "Calculus Made Clear." The boys managed to learn calculus without me. I watched them do the assignments. I smiled when they told me about complex concepts. I nodded wisely as they would work out tough problems, I[..]
Bible lessons for kids is of utmost importance to homeschooling. It is my personal belief that the heart of your homeschool adventure should be teaching your children about God and training them to grow up to be Godly men and women of faith. A good education is important, but the bottom line is that if your children don't have a saving faith in God, they have nothing. Let me tell you a story... One day, I was feeling sorry for myself. I was tired, burned out, and just generally overworked - sound familiar???? I had been trying to clean, feed kids, teach kids and take care of the babies and... I was sick. Nothing serious, just one of those rotten colds. The kids were "running amuck" :)[..]
Multiplication by Two - How to Practice...
If you want to teach a child to multiply by two, one of the easiest ways is to explain that multiplication by two is simply doubling the number. Instead of showing the child endless multiplication tables and multiplication charts, get out a deck of cards and do the following:o Remove the Tens, Jacks, Queens and Kings. You won't need them.o Take a Two of any other suit (say Spades) and place it face up on the table.o Take the Ace through Nine of any suit (say diamonds). Shuffle them face down.o Start turning the cards over one by one, and as you do, say what the product of that number, multiplied by two, is.o It is important to remember not to say to yourself, "Two times (whatever number[..]
Law of Chemical Combinations
The law of conversation of mass may be demonstrated by the union of hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) to form water. If the H2 and O2 are weighted before they unite it will be found their combined weight is equal to the weight of water (H2O) formed. Chemistry deals with the matter and the changes occurring in it, chemists are particularly interested in these changes, where one or more substances are changed in to quite different substances. They had found that these chemical changes are governed by some empirical laws known as laws of chemical combinations. These laws are: 1. Law of conservation of mass. 2. Law of constant composition (or) Law of definite proportions 3. Law of multiple[..]
Practical Homeschooling - Help Has Arrived!
I have extolled the virtue of homeschooling magazines repeatedly over several articles. In those articles I stated how critical such magazines are to the success of the at home learning and teaching experience. In this article, I want to write about a particular magazine which parents will find contains just the help they need to insure success of their children's education. Practical Homeschooling Magazine is published monthly and requires a paid subscription to receive it. Subscribers may sign up for domestic or international delivery. There are several excellent resources offered for free with paid subscriptions. I reviewed the current issue and found articles that gave advice on how[..]
How to Do Home School Curriculums That Excite...
Many parents heartily agreed engaging a child in home school curriculum is never an easy task. There are some workable tips here for you to solve this situation. 1) Read Right Steer clear of stuff that teaches you 'how to teach your children'! Too many book choices may confuse you! A few quality guides are all you need. The rest should come from your innate love for teaching and enjoyment of the subject! 2) Read Up On Different Subjects Read up on history, geography-ethnic diversity and interesting tidbits about cuisine (that way you can introduce your kids to the vegetation of the area!), literature and bio diversity. Children's books give you a wonderful perspective on all subjects.[..]
How Busy Parents Homeschool
If you are thinking that homeschooling your child but are busy and have little time to prepare and teach the lessons that they need, there are still ways that you can homeschool your kids using some great independent programs. Traditional Independent Programs There are many traditional independent homeschooling programs that will allow your kids to work independently of their parents. They provide the instructions to allow children to work at their own pace. These programs cover the same topics as they would have learned in school. Most parents using these programs spend less time assisting their kids one-on-one than they previously spent assisting with homework! Computerized[..]
Draw Closer to Your Kids With a Daily Afternoon...
"I started drinking tea when my children were preschool age. Somewhere along the line we started having Afternoon Tea together after school. My children are now teenagers and love having tea almost as much as I do."-Brenda Hyde The typical menu for tea time seems to include several different types of tea sandwiches, cut into squares or triangles (cucumber, chicken salad, egg salad, etc), some kind of quiche, grapes, scones, cookies, cake or pie, and finally, tea! (1) If you have more than one child, and you want to share tea time with them all at once, make sure you also plan special times alone with each one. Perhaps a weekly afternoon tea for each child, separate from the regular one.[..]
Everyday homeschooling is becoming more popular, especially among Christian families. Consider these concepts about Christian homeschooling to help decide if homeschooling is right for your children. Stated in the bible is the text that children will not stray from what they are taught. Proverbs 22:6 argues well on this, placing a high value on a child's education: 'train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it.' One verse in particular stands out as a clear argument for raising children to be upright, and will definitely stand out to parents thinking about homeschooling their children. If you desire that your young ones have Christian values[..]
Games Help Home School Students Learn
Home school parents, especially those just beginning, sometimes want to bring 'school' home. This seldom works. As a homeschooling method, it is usually disastrous. Schooling at home should be about learning at home, not necessarily the same way students at school learn. While some 'book learning' is vital, there is more to home schooling than doing workbook pages or reading a book. One teaching method that works well is using games to teach or reinforce lessons. Some home school parents play Yahtzee with their children several times each week. The game helps children learn their addition and multiplication facts. Another game some home school parents use is Where in the World is Carmen[..]
The Homeschooling Mom Needs To Socialise Too
When parents make the decision to homeschool their children, their primary concern is usually the lack of opportunity for their children to mix with other children on a regular basis. This is also one of the main criticisms used against homeschooling by it's opponents. However, parents, too, can be affected by the lack of socialising opportunities. Many lifetime friendships between mothers have been formed at the school gates. Waiting for the children to emerge gives mothers a great opportunity to chat and discuss school, bringing up children and all lifes little and not so little problems. Becoming involved with PTA committees and functions, as well as volunteering to help in the[..]
One concern many parents have about homeschooling is having their child be recognized for his or her work. This means going through the process of having other agencies like a public school accept the work that has already been done as a credit of academic achievement versus starting the student over not accepting any of the work done. What are some ways that this could happen? First of all you have to check your state and school district laws. This will vary so much from area to area there is no solid answer. Some places you have to fill out paperwork before you teach a class and have forms for acceptance to get certain types of credits for your child. Other areas are more lenient and[..]

I read a statistic recently that 1/3 of high school graduates require remedial help in college. One third of them aren't really ready for college! You can do MUCH BETTER than public schools, just by making sure your kids are ready for college. Aiming for college early can improve their chances of getting into college AND their chances at significant financial aid. If you fail to prepare them, college is still possible; it's just more painful - financially and academically. Even if you can't seem to get prepared in one area, keep working with the other areas. They can still receive remedial help in college, but you can provide them the best possible preparation in other areas. Always be[..]
Archery and Psycho-Cybernetic Strategies
There is an incredible amount of truth to the reality that whatever you can imagine in your mind you can achieve in the waking hours. Thus, combining this strength of mind to your archery talents is a match made for the superstars of the sport. There is a famous book on this topic, it is a classic called; "Psycho Cybernetics," by Maltz written in the late 1950s. He explains the power of the mind, and does not go into too much scientific detail because at the time we really didn't know that much, but he shows after many studies of athletes, movie stars, politicians, sports heroes, military generals, and other notable human professions that the advantage goes to those who can imagine the[..]
Review of How To Read a Book - The Classic...
There is so much information out there that professionals can become overwhelmed just thinking about it. How can you keep pace? Do you know how to read effectively? How to Read a Book which was originally written in 1940 and updated in 1972 is packed with lots of useful information, and it isn't the type of book you read once. I thought that on my second reading it would be very helpful if I discussed the contents with a group of people, then and only then would I be able to really make use of the wealth of knowledge that it contains. The stated primary goal of How to Read a Book is to "know how to make books teach us well" if we are open to continuous learning and discovering. Mortimer[..]

Maintaining student motivation during classroom discussion is the most difficult steps in delivering educational subject matter. Here are some tips to maintain student's interest. Most of the time, intelligent student stays with you during lesson proper while the average student can lose their attention due to their classmate or friends noisiness. Classroom management is a skills that teacher learn gradually. Normally, teacher will acquire this after one full year of experience. Knowing this technique will help teacher easily adjust to the teaching and learning situation. 1. Praises should be informal. From Drake's Equation to Probability...
How will mankind cope with knowledge that there are other intelligent life forms in the Universe, many that are vastly more powerful in the mind than mere human beings? Will religion allow this these findings or deny them, how might they go about explaining the truth or concealing it? Scientists know it is only a matter of time; if not in this generation the next or the next one after that. With our latest technology at Seti and the advanced systems replacing the Hubble Telescope we are on the verge of discovery. Mankind will move out and seek the stars and it will change all we are and all we think in the process. Are we ready, some of us are, but are you? Well, if you would like to[..]

No Child Left Behind? The True Story of a...
The Trials and Tests of Teaching at Risk Students The first five pages of Elizabeth Blake's (by the way no relation) story found me helplessly engrossed. I was hooked and had to read "No Child Left Behind: The True Story of a Teacher's Quest." After 20 years as a Medical Technologist in chemistry and hematology Elizabeth Blake was looking for a change, for a new career. She felt a deep-seated sense of calling to pursue the required education courses of the State Department of Education for a provisional license for teaching. The call of teaching and helping teen age at-risk kids pulled her like a magnet. She received a contract as a Science teacher at a small alternative school for[..]
The world media has bombarded us with doom and gloom scenarios. Former politicians have been given the highest awards in science for scaring us with docu-dramas. The United Nation demands the world acts or we are all going to cook to death in a giant crock pot of green house gases? But, at the end of the day the temperature hasn't risen much, the ocean hasn't risen at all and much of all this nonsense, appears to be hot air, at least the global-warming dissenters believe, now labeled as "Deniers" even though they have proof and research to back them up. It is for this reason that perhaps, I have decided to look at the facts. And have read research, books, watched[..]
The modern environmental movement was established with the release of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring in 1962. It was an important work of literature that opened the eyes of the World to the dangers of toxic chemical pollutants in the environment. In her book, Rachel Carson cleverly integrated the concerns of urban and industrial reformers with the greater ecological issues of the day. Silent Spring shocked the world by revealing the devastating impact of uncontrolled and unregulated pesticide use. But Rachel Carson also delved into the historical background of pesticides giving us an insight into the reasons why pesticides like DDT became so popular, so quickly. She realised that the[..]
Inflammation Nation was written by Floyd H. Chilton, Ph.D. and explains common inflammatory diseases and their causes. A good portion of the book is dedicated to eczema, which is dermatitis or skin inflammation. Many of those dealing with the disease could benefit from Dr. Chilton's explanation of eczema which not only dives into the "how to" but also the "whys" of the disease. I was particularly impressed with three aspects of the book. One was his detailed explanation of the common causes of inflammation in the U.S. He presents information which points to things that most of eat, drink and do which are causing issues. If you've wondered why you've come down with eczema, then this book[..]

The alchemists developed and used many laboratory equipment such as funnels, breakers, crucibles for melting and fusion, retorts for distillation, balances for weighing, etc. They discovered various acids, alcohols and[..]

Asimov's 40 Year-Old Essays Out of Date? Never!
Isaac Asimov needs no introduction. At least, I hope he doesn't, even though he passed away almost 17 years ago. His science fiction books are still well known - the Positronic Robot series and the Foundation and Empire series are still in print to this day. So are some of his non-fiction works. Unfortunately, the essays he wrote for The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, which were collected into twenty-three anthologies - the first one published in 1962 and the last one in 1990, have not fared so well. They are all out of print and have been for some time. Worse than that, they are probably no longer available at your local library, either. And that is a pity. The fact that they[..]
The other day at a staff meeting, one of my co-workers was talking about a project that had gone badly off the rails. "Per angusta ad augusta," I said as he concluded his tale of woe. Everyone looked at me -- uncomprehendingly, of course. "You know ... through difficulties to honors," I said. Now, I am definitely no Latin scholar, but I do arrive at staff meetings armed with several memorized phrases from the ancient tongue, ready to whip them out whenever the occasion permits. My source? It's a breezy little tome titled, Amo, Amas, Amat and More; How to Use Latin to Your Own Advantage and to the Astonishment of Others. Its author is Eugene Ehrlich, a renowned dictionary editor and[..]
